Samaritans. Luke speaks more of Samaritans than the other Gospels do. Jesus tells the parable of the good Samaritan (10:29 – 37), James and John are rebuked for wanting to call down fire from heaven on a Samaritan village (9:51 – 56), and the one leper who returns to thank Jesus is a Samaritan (17:11 – 19). This not only continues the theme of the gospel for the outcast (Samaritans were despised by Jews) but also sets the stage for Acts, where the gospel will pass through Samaria on its way to the Gentile world (Acts 1:8; 8:4 – 25).

Women. While women were generally relegated to positions of little status in the ancient world, Luke emphasizes the value Jesus placed on them as disciples and partners in ministry. No other Gospel gives so much emphasis to the women who played a part in Jesus’ ministry. Luke refers to thirteen women not mentioned elsewhere in the Gospels. The first two chapters deal especially with women (Mary, Elizabeth, and Anna). Other passages include the widow of Nain (7:12 – 15), the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet (7:36 – 50), the women who supported Jesus (8:1 – 3), the woman with a blood disease (8:43 – 48), Mary and Martha (10:38 – 42), the “daughter of Abraham” (13:10 – 17), the poor widow (21:1 – 4), the “daughters of Jerusalem” who lament Jesus (23:27 – 31), those who watched the crucifixion (23:49), and those who report the resurrection (23:55 – 24:11).
